EU announced a 6.4 billion Euro research fund to be spent by end of 2011 to boost the European economy. They envisage 600 million for health research, 1.2 billion to boost ICT developments, 1.3 billion euros for best creative scientists (as selected by the European Research Council) and 800 million euros for SMEs. The other main objectives of this investment are to bring research discoveries into the mainstream, to shorten the "research to retail" which would see EU compete better with the US and others and in terms of nanoresearch to encourage developments for patenting and commercialisation. Calls have already been launched. Areas for consideration by EUnited members are ICT, Nanosciences; Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies, Energy, Environment and possibly Transport, General Activities and Joint Technology Initiatives.
