Metallurgical machinery/plant (machinery/plant is understood as an "assembly of machinery" according to Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC) are subject to various European Directives. In the first place the Machinery Directive applies. Furthermore, the Pressure Equipment Directive, ATEX Directive and the Low-Voltage Directive are of particular interest.
According to the various directives, metallurgical machinery/plant must be accompanied by original instructions, that is to say, instructions verified by the manufacturer or his authorised representative. As a general rule, all health and safety related instructions must be supplied in the official EU language or languages of the Member State in which it is put into service.
In this regard the question arises, if every single information has to be translated, or is it sufficient to translate the key documents such as drawings, descriptions and explanations regarding normal operation (incl. maintenance and repair)? These questions are matter of controversial discussions between manufacturer and user as well as authorities.
A new Position Paper is now in preparation and will contribute to the clarification of these issues. We are pleased to inform you about the current state of discussion.
