Chairman's Report

Dear EUnited Robotics members, dear readers,

It is with great sadness to share the news of sudden passing of our esteemed colleague and friend Rudolf Güdel. No words can adequately express our sorrow at his death and our gratitude for the opportunity to know and work with him.  EUnited Robotics is grateful for his valuable contributions and his dedication.  We will honor and cherish his memory.

World Robotics, the international benchmark for global robot statistics covering all relevant market related activities of industrial and service robots, was published by the IFR today. Based on this study, the accelerating demand for industrial robots will continue in the next few years. More than 200,000 industrial robots will be installed in 2014 worldwide, which is 15% more than in 2013.  Between 2015 and 2017, growth will likely continue at about 12% on average per year with Asia in the lead. Europe, in particular, had 43,284 units of robots installed in 2013 (5% above 2012) with a total accumulated stock of 392,227 units. In 2014, the number of installations in Europe is expected to rise to almost 46,000 units (an increase of 6%).

On the service robotics front, IFR reports worldwide sales of about 21,000 service robots for professional use in 2013, 4% more than in 2012.  For the period 2014-2017, sales are expected to increase to about 134,500 units with an estimated value of USD18.9 billion.

These are exciting times for our industry. You can read more about the global robot market as well as other important topics in this issue.

I look forward to seeing the EUnited Robotics members at our upcoming members’ assembly on November 20th in Brussels.

Enjoy the read.

Robotics Community in Mourning

Loss of a true mentor and a great leader -

It is with profound sorrow and regret to announce the passing of Rudolf Güdel, owner and chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Güdel Group and vice chairman of EUnited Robotics. Rudolf Güdel passed away on 17th September at the age of sixty-five following an operation after a brief but serious illness.

Rudolf Güdel was a true mentor, an outstanding entrepreneur who had an unerring instinct for the right decisions and the courage to invest in innovations making Güdel AG what it is today. He was a valued member of EUnited Robotics since its inception in 2004 and was elected Vice Chairman in May 2014.  His brilliance, passion, energy, and sense of humor touched not only people who knew him well but also the ones that met him just briefly.  We will greatly miss Rudolf Güdel and are indebted to him for his valuable contributions.  It was a privilege to know and work with him.  His memory will be cherished by all of us.

Our sincere condolences to the Güdel family and everyone at the Güdel Group during this difficult time.
