EUnited Spring Event - Panel discussion

May 07, 2018

The EUnited AISBL Spring Meetings took place at the Brussels Steigenberger Wiltcher’s Hotel on 7 May 2018. During the internal event Members and stakeholders had the opportunity to participate in an engaged panel discussion on EU Trade Policy and potential impact of looming trade wars on European industrial competitiveness.

Nele Eichhorn – Member of Cabinet, Commissioner for Trade/Cecilia Malmström,
Werner Auer - Executive Vice President, Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A., Italy and
Gerd Götz – Secretary General, Aluminium Europe

introduced the topic from a broad range of perspectives. The key EUnited interest, namely the US threat of introducing tariffs on certain European steel and aluminium products and its relevance to the metallurgical equipment supplying industry and their customers, was also part of the discussion.

Moderator Timo Würz, Director EUnited Metallurgy, initiated a discussion on the impacts which are also heavily influenced by the ongoing discussion on Chinese overcapacities in the steel sector and trade conflicts increasing the risk of shifting trade flows leading to distortions in the European steel market.  Panelists also debated unilateral actions of the US and respective counteractions of other trade blocks and how these impair international organisations. Following an engaged discussion on how Europe´s policy can (re)act effectively or how a trade balance between Europe and the US and China can be achieved, the audience had the chance to broaden the discussion on their expectations.
