Henrik A. Schunk Re-Elected as Chairman of EUnited Robotics

Brussels, 22 November 2013 - Henrik A. Schunk, Managing Partner of SCHUNK GmbH in Lauffen (Germany), was re-elected as Chairman of EUnited Robotics for a second term. He will continue to lead the activities of EUnited Robotics, established in 2004 as the European Robotics Association, for another three years. Wilfried Eberhardt, Executive Vice President Marketing & Associations at KUKA Roboter GmbH in Gersthofen (Germany), was elected as Vice Chairman.  The new board will continue to represent the robotics industry in Europe taking up issues of high industrial priority.

Good Prospects for the Robotics Market in Europe
The European robotics market has been on the rise for the past few years. Although there was a sales decline in 2012 compared to 2011, still around 41,000 industrial robots were sold in Europe which is the second highest sales level on record according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).  From 2007 to 2012, sales rose by 3% on average per year.  Based on estimates of the EUnited Robotics members as well as IFR, robot sales in Europe will have an average increase of 4% per year between 2014 and 2016.

EUnited Robotics Planned Activities
Building on good contacts to the European Commission, universities, and research institutes EUnited Robotics will further support industrially relevant research projects, technology transfer, and the European Public-Private Partnership for Robotics (Robotics PPP). Robotics PPP is the ambitious initiative of the European Commission within Horizon 2020, the European framework programme for research and innovation in the period 2014 – 2020 aiming to strengthen the cooperation between research and industry in robotics.

At his re-election, Henrik Schunk thanked all members and stated, "There is a lot happening in European robotics. From the forthcoming robotics PPP to the steady rise of the professional service robotics sector and the upcoming 2014 AUTOMATICA trade fair, I am happy to represent EUnited Robotics on this exciting journey for the next three years." Another focus of the EUnited Robotics activities will lie on strengthening public relations for more public awareness and better acceptance of robotics in society.  Furthermore, it is imperative to show the end-users the efforts made by the robotics industry concerning energy-efficiency and safety in human-robot cooperation.  In addition, EUnited Robotics supports Messe Munich in developing service robotics as a central theme at AUTOMATICA, the world’s leading trade fair for robotics with the widest range of industrial and service robots on display.
