TTIP Considers Engineering an Important Sector

From July 14 to 18, 2014, the sixth round of negotiations for the TTIP took place in Brussels.

During a stakeholder event, Lionel Platteuw, Director of EUnited aisbl took the opportunity to present EUnited’s and the Robotics sector’s view on the chances and challenges of TTIP (Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership). This meeting was a very wide consultation with over 400 stakeholders (consumers, environmental NGOs, trade unions, public health representatives, and businesses). After 74 stakeholder presentations, the chief negotiators gave a briefing on the current state of play.

The regulatory agenda, including technical barriers to trade, is considered to be the most economically significant part of TTIP and what makes TTIP different from the other trade agreements, but is also among the most complex topics to discuss. Engineering now considered as an own sector annex.

The seventh round of EU - U.S. negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement will take place in Chevy Chase, Maryland from September 29 – October 3, 2014.

Although the trade agreement is generally rated as positive by EUnited members, there is only a very vague idea on the specific impact of TTIP on robotics. Therefore, EUnited Robotics will conduct several expert interviews to draw a more concrete picture of the situation. If we see a significant impact for our industry, we will also work on a joint position with RIA (Robotics Industries Association).

First step now is a positive statement towards the press as an antipole to “chlorine-washed chicken”. Furthermore, EUnited head office has compiled a brief position paper on the topic.
